Updates to Depop’s search results
We’ve changed the way search works. Instead of only new items showing first, search results will prioritise relevant, clear listings from shops that stick to the rules and have positive feedback.
We’ve done this to create a safer space for our buyers – we want everyone to have the best experience possible on Depop. We also want you to have more control over the success of your shop and incentivise continuous improvement. Sell better. Get seen more. Sell more.
How do I get seen?
Being seen just means doing the things you would usually do as a good seller. We’ve outlined a few actions you can take to optimise your listings, create a better experience for buyers and get seen more.
- Create clear, detailed and accurate listing descriptions.
- Great listings include measurements, colour, sub-category, brand (where relevant) and condition.
- Use all four photos in your listing to give buyers a real feel for how the item looks.
- Offer tracked national and international shipping options to give your buyer peace of mind and keep you protected if anything goes wrong.
- Follow the rules.
- Never accept or make out-of-app payments.
- Don’t add irrelevant tags or brands to the description.
- Don’t sell counterfeit items.
- Keep a positive selling record.
- Be responsive and kind to other users
- Always ship your item quickly and with tracking
- If things go wrong, try to be proactive to resolve the issue without the Buyer having to escalate
If you are a new seller we won’t penalise you. Focus on starting to build positive feedback with relevant listings and following the rules.

Are you prioritising large or Top Sellers over mid size and small sellers?
No. The size of a seller – or volume of sales – has no influence on search results. The results are determined only by the quality of listing and the experience they provide to the buyer. Depop wants to maintain a diverse mix of sellers and run a marketplace for everyone – regardless of seller size.
What about new sellers?
New sellers aren’t penalised. We give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you’re going to create good listings.
Will this affect my sales?
We’ve seen sales shifting from lower quality listings to higher quality listings, but not across sellers of different sizes. If you think your sales have been impacted, focus on how you can improve your listings.
How quickly will I move up the search listings?
Your seller quality is influenced by what you do, not who you are or how long you’ve been selling. By being a good seller, you can directly control the discoverability of your listings. See above for guidelines on how to sell better.
I’m following the guidelines. Why am I not moving up in search?
Check that you’re following all of Depop’s policies. A seller posting listings with irrelevant tags or multiple brands in the listing won’t be prioritised. The same applies if you’re asking buyers to perform transactions out of the app, selling counterfeit items, taking a long time to ship, or sending items untracked.
Please also be aware of the depth of available items on Depop. For example, your item might not appear at the very top of a popular search term like ‘Nike,’ and most purchases happen after searches with several search terms and filters. The key here is having a concise description. Make the most of the category inputs to boost visibility when buyers narrow their searches by category, colour, size etc.
I’m trying to improve. How long before I see results?
If a seller changes their behaviour to that of a good seller, their items will appear higher in search. We revisit seller quality daily, based on a seller's most recent activity.
How did you test this feature?
We’re testing this new ranking on a small percentage of buyers. We’ve already seen an increase on the percentage of positive reviews and reduction of negative reviews from buyers in the test group.
